Marisa Linton is both a professor of history and a prize-winning novelist of grounded fantasies.
In 2023 she won the Times/Chicken House competition with her eerie young adult fantasy, The Binding Spell, published by Chicken House, May 2025. It’s set in a remote village where witches, ghosts, and figures from ancient folklore inhabit a hidden world on the edge of our own. Marisa describes it as a mash-up of This Country and The Wicker Man.
Marisa’s first adult novel, Circle of Shadows, has a dark academia edge. It’s about a young woman who becomes an occult detective to fight demons, both fantastical and human. Think Sherlock Holmes, with a supernatural vibe, and a modern-minded female investigator. It came out with Hodderscape, October 2025. The sequel, Domain of Darkness, will be published in 2026.
