Jennifer Ridyard was born in England in 1971, but grew up in Benoni, a mining town near Johannesburg, South Africa.
Following school – where she excelled at English, winning prizes for fiction – and a rocky term at university, Jennie worked variously in different jobs before finally finding her niche when she was hired as a cub reporter on the Benoni City Times in 1994, the year of South Africa’s first democratic election.
After winning several awards for journalism, Jennie became lifestyle editor for The Citizen, one of South Africa’s national daily newspapers, where she worked until 2004. She still contributes a weekly editorial column to the newspaper. She continues to work as a freelance copywriter and journalist.
She currently lives in Dublin, Ireland, with her husband and co-author, John, but frequently visits South Africa, where she still has a home.
Jennie has two sons, Cameron and Alistair, and various dog-shaped children too.
